Les Racines du Ciel

« There is a lot of Morel – the hero of The Roots of Heaven – in us, the guardian angel of animals who tirelessly tries to get a petition signed against elephant hunting. »

Ecology has been part of my daily life for almost 20 years. I was already taking cuttings from the press covering the mass extinction of animal and plant species, which is now part of our daily discourse. Before coming back from Japan, where I was working for a luxury French brand with no real purpose, my stay in a Buddhist monastery was like a great internal cleansing: from that moment on I decided to live by my own convictions rather than focusing on social success. The textile sector was the most familiar to me, so naturally this was where I started to think about a line of clothing that would respect people, the planet and animals, and that could be returned to the land at the end of its useful life. My meeting with Christian triggered the creation of Les Racines du Ciel (The Roots of Heaven) in 2005.

There are those meetings where there is clearly a before and an after…So, after fashion studies, awards in various competitions and fashion shows in different countries, it was time to question the fashion sector’s practices, whose meaning I no longer understood. I put a stop to my brand and chose to create, putting sustainability at the heart of the design and production processes. Creating meaning, knowing why we do things, has become absolutely essential for me. It is also what I transmit to the students at the École Duperré and ESMOD, supporting them in their creative processes, knitting techniques and, of course, sustainability.
Steeped in Romain Gary’s work, a decidedly humanist ecological opus, we create and produce clothing with the challenge of creating a future for all living creatures, whether that be plants, animals or humans.
